Coláiste Bhrian Bóromha provides week long courses to pupils in 5th & 6th Class in primary school. Taught by experienced primary school teachers, these courses meet the language needs of the pupils while addressing the learning objectives laid out in the primary school curriculum. During their time on the course, communication with pupils is through Irish, and we encourage pupils to speak Irish to the best of their ability.

These courses provide pupils with a strong foundation in spoken Irish prior to advancing into 6th Class / 1st year at secondary school. It provides pupils with the opportunity to learn Irish in a fun, practical and engaging way, develop a positive attitude towards learning and foster a lasting love for the Irish language.

Improve your Irish language skills with 3 hours of focused lessons (Monday–Friday) from 10:00am - 1:00pm. Enjoy a mix of learning methods to include games, poems, songs & dramas to make grammar and language practice fun and effective!

Am Lóin: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Seisiún Tráthnóna

Afternoons are packed with variety! From 3:00pm - 5:00pm, take part in team sports, music, water activities, guided walks, or get creative with dance, drama & art sessions.

Am Dinnéir: 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Imeachtaí Oíche

From 7:00pm - 9:00pm, experience traditional céilí dancing, show off your talents in the talent show, and compete for cool prizes in table quizzes. A great way to learn and have fun together!

Travel, Venues & Accommodation

Travel

Arrival: Sunday

Meeting point (for those travelling by bus): 5:00pm opposite Óstán Loch Altan, Gortahork.

Parents and children are welcome to use alternative means of transport and meet us at the community centre (F92 PR86) between 5pm and 6pm.

Bus Transport: Arrival to Gortahork @ 5:00pm. Students can avail of public transport (John McGinley Coaches), with pick-up points in Dublin City, Ardee & Monaghan. A representative of the college will accompany students on the bus departing Dublin City Centre (Parnell Street North) at 12:30pm.

Parents and children are welcome to use alternative means of transport and meet us at the designated time.

Students are assigned to host houses, enjoy a light supper from the bean an tí, and gather at 7:30pm for a brief meeting and céilí with staff and other students.

For those using John McGinley Coach transport:

Departure point: 7:15am Óstán Loch Altan, Gortahork

A representative of the college will accompany students on the bus departing Gortahork at 7:15am, with arrival in Dublin City (O’Connell Street) at 12:10pm.

Alternatively, parents are welcome to collect pupils from their host house no later than10:00am.

Venue

Monday - Friday

Morning classes and afternoon/evening activities take place in the local community centre. Some activities will be off-site e.g. water sports.

Accommodation

Students are placed in host houses that are approved by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media. Whenever possible, students will be housed with friends. Please make sure to include the names of any friends you wish to stay with on the application form in the next section.

Pre-Course Meeting

All students attending Coláiste Bhrian Bóramha must participate in a pre-course meeting, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. During this meeting, parents or guardians will be required to sign documentation related to their child's health, safety, and welfare.

The meeting will also provide an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have about your child’s stay in the Gaeltacht.

Details of the meeting will be shared with you in due course.

Course Fee

€490

Pupils arrive on Sunday evening and depart on Saturday morning. The course fee includes all tuition, activities, accommodation, meals and travel during that time. It does not include travel to and from the course.

To secure your place, a €200 deposit is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due by Friday, 16th May 2025.

FAQs

  • These courses are designed for pupils aiming to improve their spoken and written Irish skills. They are open to students in 5th or 6th class during the 2024/2025 academic year.

    To enroll, pupils must be at least 10 years old by September 30th, 2024 and must study Irish as part of their regular schooling.

    Can children from a Gaelscoil attend?
    Yes! Pupils from both English-medium schools and Irish-medium schools (Gaelscoileanna) are welcome.

  • Who will my child stay with?
    Students are placed in houses approved by the Department of Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. Houses must comply with the relevant statutory responsibilities which include:

    o   Children’s First Act 2015

    o   Fire Service Act 1981

    All members of the host family over 16 years old must be Garda vetted in accordance with the National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Act 2012. 

    Students may be accommodated with friends and are asked to list their friendship group during registration. Boys and girls are housed separately.

    Can my child attend on their own?
    Absolutely! Whether attending solo or with a group, all students are welcome and will be housed accordingly.

  • Each course will participate in a minimum of one water sports activity. The activities vary depending on a number of factors to include weather, safe water conditions, availability of activities.
    The selection of activities may include;
    - Indoor swimming
    - Surfing
    - Windsurfing
    - Kayaking

    Please ensure to pack swimsuit/shorts, swim hat, goggles, flip-flops, and towel.

  • Coláiste Bhrian Bóramha have a strict policy in relation to mobile phone use.

    Can my child bring their mobile phone?
    Students may bring mobile phones, however these are stored by the bean an tí. Pupils are only allowed to use mobile phones between 6.00 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. in a public area. (e.g. use of a phone in a bedroom is forbidden). Students are not allowed to have or use a phone at any other time.

    If students wish to contact parents/guardians at any time during the day the College principal will facilitate this. Parents may also contact their children by contacting the College.

    Students are not allowed to use social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, BeReal etc.

    To ensure full immersion in the Irish language, we aim to minimize exposure to English during their time in the Gaeltacht.

    Can my child take photos/videos on their phone?
    Phones cannot be used for photography/ videography purposes. Pupils may bring a disposable or digital camera only.
    Ipads or other tablets are not permitted.
    The use of mobile/tablet apps such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, BeReal and other are strictly prohibited.

    What if I need to contact my child?
    Parents/Guardians can reach children directly between the hours of 6:00pm - 6:30pm on their mobile devices.

    Parents/Guardians may contact the course organiser (a contact number will be provided) who will in turn contact the child/bean an tí.

    What if my child needs to contact me outside of 6:00pm - 6:30pm?
    The child will make it known to the bean an tí, teacher, cinnire or course organiser that they need to make contact with a parent/guardian. The course organiser/bean an tí will facilitate this.

  • The course organiser will inform parents if their child becomes ill. The child may be seen by NowDoc or other local health services, with any associated costs being the responsibility of the parent.
